Explorateurs et architectes du monde souterrain : un nouveau regard sur les sociétés de la préhistoire
Comme en atteste l’art pariétal, les sociétés passées ont exploré et aménagé le milieu souterrain. Mais les peintures rupestres ne sont pas les seuls témoignages de la présence humaine dans les grottes durant la préhistoire. Dans une étude publiée dans Journal of Archaeological Method and Theory, nous avons étudié des alignements de stalagmites cassées dans la grotte de Saint-Marcel, en Ardèche. Vers -8 000 ans, des groupes humains ont cheminé 1,5 à 2,5 km sous terre, franchi des obstacles et déplacé des milliers de concrétions (stalactites, stalagmites, colonnes…) pour les assembler en des structures dûment pensées.
